Ember to Ember (Sequel to Volunteers) Chapter 12
Author's Note: Yeah, so this is the last chapter. And since this story is supposed to be taking place in 2007/2008, y'all can imagine that this chapter is happening... well, right now. Somewhere in an AU where Deathly Hallows didn't happen in quite the same way, what with some folks not being very dead, and others regrettably unavailable for an Epilogue ;)

Thanks hugely to [info]scrtkpr for betaing this twice, again, and to [info]naatz, for wonderful beta as well :) :)

Now, because this is the last chapter and it's April 30, I get to do a little plug! As I've mentioned before, this is a sequel to Volunteers, a fic written for [info]hds_beltane. [info]hds_beltane was a gift exchange created last year by [info]twistedm, for fics featuring H/D/S in different combinations and permutations, with postings going up during the month of Beltane (May), and often featuring a Beltane theme.

Guess what starts tomorrow? The second round!

So: Go! Read! It's a brand new set of fics at [info]hds_beltane. You know you want to :) :)

    hd_worldcup: "Not tonight, Joséphine"
OK, if any body can figure out the link between the above quotation and the latest round of [info]hd_worldcup fics... I dunno, I'll say "You're right!" or something.

Anyway, the seventh set of fics at [info]hd_worldcup went up yesterday, but I was, I believe, flapping about like a chicken with two heads chopped off (get your mind around that mental image if you will) and thus am sadly late with the linkage.

    The prompt is The Empress.

We do recs around here too ;)
It's been all about the H/D stuff lately, what with [info]hd_worldcup, but as I won't actually be reccing any of them till after the voting is done, my inner reccer has been feeling all lonely. So I'm taking her out to play, with these three very short fics, neither of which (gasp!) is H/D.

When Harry chances upon Draco's refuge, searching for his own kind of peace, everything will change.
Artist's Note: This piece is in honor of The H/D Pub Fic, and was also heavily inspired by the Five; an emotional upheaval, and the Two; a fated union of opposites.

    Twinfics
And because I'm not commenting on the [info]hd_worldcup fics, I've got to find something I can comment on. So: twinfics ahoy!

April 1 (when I posted this on lj) was George Weasley's birthday (this year, his 30th), and lots of good twinfics went up. Here's a few I liked:

    • Sharing, by Bad Mum
Summary: It is the closest he can get to explaining that sharing with Fred is not like sharing at all, because Fred is the other half of himself." Written for the Reviews Lounge Birthdays project, and to celebrate Fred and George's birthday.

    • Birthday Fool, by Heavenly Pearl
Summary: George faces his first birthday without his brother. Post series.

    • Buried Memories, by dogstar-ebony
Summary: What happens when you lose a part of yourself so huge that what is left is simply the imprint of a person? Oneshot, post DH, George Weasley reflecting on his relationship with Fred.

This one actually made me tear up, dammit.

    • Seven Potters, by [info]ciroccoj
Summary: Not birthday-centric, but Fred-centric. Missing moment from DH.

    • April Fool's, by, um, someone I know really well. Ahem.
Summary: Ron's not sure he should have asked.

    • The Indivisible By Two series, by [info]shadowfiction.
Summary: This set of stories (three so far) is made of win. Fred didn't die. He's very much alive and (mostly) well. The latest installation is On the Up and Up, and I'm full of love for its tough love :)

    BTW, yes, I'm totally sock-puppeting again :)

    Any more I missed?

ETC: Wow, um, morbid music choice... it's just what was playing when I posted this, honest.

hd_worldcup: And they're off! (AKA The Fool), and sad news
So, um, a little late, but I'm finally posting links to the HD World Cup.

    • So, it's April Fool's, ETA: ::ahem:: close enough, anyway and the first postings are up over at [info]hd_worldcup. I dithered over how to rec fics for this. Rec only things I like, regardless of team? Rec everything by my team, regardless of whether I liked it or not? Rec only what I like on my team? Provide a squee for things I liked and a simple link for everything else?

Every decision seemed fraught with potential drama. Unintentionally hurting a team member. Unintentionally hurting a friend on another team. Outing myself if I post glowing blurbs about every entry on my team but mine. Yadda yadda yadda.

Here's my solution: link to everything, no recs till after the reveal. Cowardly? Yes. I sort to Ravenclaw every single time I do one of those sorting memes.

By the way, for those who don't know, the prompts for this year are tarot cards. The first prompt, appropriately enough for April Fool's, is The Fool.

      • Prodigal - Team Fanon
        Wordcount: 13,326
Rating: NC-17 for graphic violence and language
Warnings: AU. First Person POV. Draco-centric. Set after HBP. Not DH Compliant.
Summary: One year after Dumbledore's death, the tide turns in Voldemort's favour and with Harry Potter locked in the Malfoy dungeons, the fate of the Wizarding World seems bleak. Who'll save the saviour when he's in need of saving?

      • Catch Me If I Fall -- Team EWE
        Wordcount: 15800
        Rating: R
Summary: As the world recovers from war, Draco faces an uncertain future. Unusual advice sets him on a new path, but only time will tell if he can avoid the pitfalls.

      • Riptide -- Team Epilogue
        Wordcount: 19,244
        Rating: PG13-ish
Warnings: Infidelity, but hey, it's Team Epilogue, what do you expect?
Summary: (With apologies to George Lucas) "Who's the more foolish: the fool, or the fool who follows him?"

      • Fool (Or, The Many Good Deeds of Draco Malfoy) -- Team Canon
        Wordcount: 18,000+
        Rating: R
        Warnings: EWE, language, sexual situations
Summary: "You haven’t done one brave or noble thing in your life, Malfoy. Then you come into my house and ask me why I won’t do the right thing for you? What have you ever done for anyone?"

    • As many of you have already heard, [info]anjenue died in a car accident on March 30. I didn't know her at all, but from what her friends have said, she was a lovely, talented person, and will be very much missed. More information can be found here. There is also a community at [info]we_love_you_anj to post memories of [info]anjenue and condolences to her family.

::hugs:: to all who knew her. Losing a friend, even if you never heard her voice, is never easy. My thoughts are with you all.

Um, there's no meaning to the above Subject line. It's just the Subject line of a piece of Spam. Although if anybody wants to make something out of it, they're welcome to do so. How about using it as a prompt for a George/Lee fic? Please?

    • I'm done Ember 10! Done! Done! Done!

::deep breath:: OK, on to Ember 11 and 12. I've got this crazy, crazy dream of finishing before May 1. 'Cause the story is supposed to be taking place from May 2007 to May 2008, and, you know, it would be really cool to post the final chapter on the day itself. Plus if [info]twistedm lets me, I could maybe link to her [info]hds_beltane site and pimp it. ::googly eyes at [info]twistedm::

    • I'm almost done my [info]weasley_fest fic!

Which would be really really cool except for the fact that that means that I'll have it sitting on my hard drive for like three months before being able to post it.

Oh if only I could've had this dire problem with my Academic Paper of Boring Doom.

    • Rec! Potter Peeps, by [info]scrtkpr! It's short, it's adorable, it's a Happy Easter :)

    • Link! Peep Show!.

    • Yikes! Cannot believe I almost forgot to link to this, because I read it and said Holy Bleep out loud (yes, I really said Bleep - my kids were nearby) Not in the Hands of Boys, part 22.

      Holy Bleep, srsly.

    ...and more random mirrorring
Funny the things that come up when you're away from the weebs for a while. To wit:

    • There has been Glee!! And I almost missed it!!!! OMGWTFBBQ!!eleven!!

::ahem:: It's called Three Indecent Acts, by [info]maple_mahogany, and it's adorable.

Quote: Now, you know I love Hermione and I would never betray her, yeah? But I can think of at least three indecent acts that I could get it up for with that girl.

    • And there has been H/D! Actually, there has been lots of H/D, and I had a list of fics I wanted to rec and now I don't. Help?

I do have a link to one of them: [info]fourth_rose's Not In the Hands of Boys, chapter 21!

BTW, um. Cliffie alert. But: ohsogood!

    • There has been a plotbunny that I'm currently batting away because seriously, this is the wrong time for it, but it keeps popping up again. We'll see how it does when I'm done my current round of fic and RL obligations. It's based around a very old entry over at [info]road_ahead, Goodbye, my son.

    • Teeny tiny snippet of the Georgefic That'll Never See the Light of Day )

    • Got my [info]weasley_fest assignment and it's a good thing I've got till June, cause I am drawing a total and absolute blank here.

What's the protocol for when you haven't put something on your list of squicks, but when you get your assignment, you wish you had? And what if it's not so much a squick as a "Um... sure, whatever floats your boat, but gosh, that sounds as sexy and intriguing to me as collecting fridge magnets"? Because it's not a squick. There's nothing wrong with it. I'm not turned off. I just don't get the attraction, in any way at all. And trying to figure out how to write it is leaving me staring at a big old blank screen with the cursor blinking mockingly at me.

I want to do this well. But I can't figure out how to do it at all.

    • I'm sure everyone and their (literate) dog has heard this one by now, but in case you haven't: Deathly Hallows will be two movies, not one. It's all too far away for me to have a definite opinion on it. Expect I'll be pleased once I think about it, as my opinions on the books and movies tend to be pretty uncritical. I reserve my discriminating mind for fics; probably 'cause I expect more out of them ;)

    • My [info]hd_worldcup fic is almost done!! ::bounce::

    • Got a huge paper due on Monday, which is decidedly not almost done ::thud::

ETA: I think I'm a little sleep-deprived. I went to put in a link to one of the things I've got in the list above, and the link I put in was

<a href="The Generalized System of Preferences (GSP), which provides import tariff preferences to developing countries, defines "internationally recognized labor rights" as including freedom of association; the right to organize and bargain collectively; the prohibition against forced labor, child labor under a certain age... and minimum acceptable employment conditions...">

...which, oddly enough, did not link to a scene with a lovely blow job. So if I've missed or messed up something crucial in this post, can y'all let me know?
